Product Photo Editing: The 7-Step Pipeline (and the Color Rule That Stops Returns)

The photograph is half the job. A raw product capture — even a good one — almost always carries a color cast, a speck of dust, a slightly tilted horizon, and a background that isn't quite pure white. Product photo editing is the pipeline that turns that raw capture into a listing-ready image, and it follows a surprisingly fixed order. Do the steps out of sequence and you re-do them; do them in order and a 50-SKU catalog becomes a system, not 50 separate struggles.

Step 1 — Crop and straighten

Before any tone work, fix the geometry. Crop to your target aspect ratio (1:1 for many marketplaces, 4:5 for Shopify themes, 4:3 for Etsy), center the product, and let it fill roughly 85% of the frame — the fill ratio Amazon enforces and that reads best everywhere. Straighten the horizon so any surface line is level; a two-degree tilt reads as carelessness at listing scale.

Crop first because every later step — exposure, cleanup, sharpening — should be evaluated on the final framing, not on pixels you are about to throw away.

Step 2 — White balance (the step that stops returns)

This is the most under-done step in amateur editing and the one with the biggest payoff. A product photographed in warm window light carries a yellow cast; the same product under a cool LED carries a blue cast. Buyers perceive that cast as the product's actual color, and "the color is wrong" is a top return reason across every category.

The reliable fix: include a grey card or white-balance reference in the first frame of a shoot. In editing, use the grey-point eyedropper on that card to neutralize the cast, then sync that white-balance setting across every photo from the same shoot. No grey card? Pick a neutral grey area in the scene — a shadow, a piece of grey packaging — and balance to it. The goal is whites that read white and product colors that read true.

Step 3 — Exposure and contrast

Set overall exposure so the product's mid-tones are accurate, then lift shadows to recover dark-side detail and pull highlights down to protect bright areas from clipping. The rule: do not clip. Once a highlight hits pure white or a shadow hits pure black, the detail in those pixels is gone and no later step recovers it. Slight underexposure is always preferable to blown highlights on metal, glass, and white packaging.

Add gentle contrast — enough that the product separates from the background, not so much that you crush the shadows you just lifted.

Step 4 — Spot healing and cleanup

At 100% zoom, remove the things that don't belong: sensor dust, lint, stray hairs, fingerprints on glossy surfaces, and the occasional scratch on a background sweep. Use the healing brush or clone stamp. This is tedious but essential — a single visible dust spot reads as a quality defect at listing scale, and buyers downgrade the whole product for it.

Do cleanup after white balance and exposure, so you are retouching the final tones rather than tones that are about to change.

Step 5 — Background cleanup

If the image is heading to a marketplace that requires pure white, the background must read as RGB 255, 255, 255 — not off-white, not 254. Brighten or replace the background until it measures pure white at the edges, while keeping the product's edges clean (no halos from over-brightening). For lifestyle scenes, this step is simpler: just make sure the background doesn't compete with the product for contrast.

Step 6 — Sharpening

Apply output sharpening for the web at the final export size. Products benefit from crisp edge definition, but over-sharpening produces visible halos around edges that read as artificial. Sharpen at the resolution you will ship (1600 to 2048 px), not the master, because resizing after sharpening either wastes or exaggerates the effect.

Step 7 — Export

Export as JPEG (or PNG where you need transparency), in the sRGB color space — any other space risks looking flat and desaturated on browsers and marketplaces that assume sRGB. Name files consistently, keep the master at full resolution, and use the same export settings across the whole catalog so the set looks coherent.

Batch editing: how a catalog becomes a system

The pipeline scales when you stop editing one image at a time. Because a single shoot shares lighting, white balance, and exposure, you can sync settings across the set: edit one frame fully, then copy its white balance, exposure, and contrast to every other frame from the same shoot. Record an action for crop, cleanup, and export, and a 50-image set processes in the time it takes to babysit the queue.

This is the real difference between editing as a chore and editing as an asset: consistent input plus synced settings produces a coherent catalog, not fifty individually tweaked images.
