How to Resize Product Images for Amazon, Shopify & Instagram (Free, In-Browser, No Photoshop)
Resizing a product photo to a marketplace's exact dimensions is the editing job every seller hits at upload time, and the part that slows them down is the assumption that it needs Photoshop, or that "resize" and "crop" are the same operation. They are not. A product shot of any shape can be fitted to a square Amazon main, a 4:5 Instagram shopping post, or a Shopify theme frame in seconds with a free in-browser tool — no software install, no upload to a server, no per-image fee. This is the step-by-step method I run, from picking the target frame through to a batched JPG export ready for the listing.
The goal is a pixel-exact, undistorted image — the product keeps its true proportions, fills the platform's required frame, and clears the resolution minimum on the first upload. Get that export right once and the same crop feeds the Amazon main, the Instagram post, and the Shopify card without a re-edit per placement.
Step 1 — Know the target frame before you touch the image
The single biggest factor in a clean resize is not the tool — it is knowing what frame you are resizing to. Every platform enforces an aspect ratio and a minimum pixel count, and uploading the wrong shape is the most common reason a listing is rejected or auto-cropped by the marketplace into something ugly.

- Shopify: the theme card is roughly 4:3 or square depending on the theme; Shopify itself accepts any aspect ratio but resizes on display, so a square master avoids letterboxing in the store grid. See Shopify product images.
- Instagram shopping: 4:5 portrait (1080×1350) is the only ratio that uses the full shopping-feed frame without being cropped to square in the profile grid. Details in the Instagram image requirements guide.
- Etsy, Walmart, TikTok Shop, Pinterest, Google Shopping: each has its own ratio and minimum — the per-platform guides carry the exact table, and the image resizer presets them so you do not retype numbers per upload.
Pick the frame for the placement you are building first. A square master clears Amazon; a 4:5 master clears Instagram shopping. If you only ever make one, make the square — it is the most universally accepted shape and the one Amazon enforces on the main.
Step 2 — Open the free in-browser resizer

Step 3 — Crop to the aspect ratio, do not stretch to it

- Drag the frame, not the product. Move and scale the crop window until the product sits where you want it inside the target ratio. The underlying pixels are not resampled at this stage — you are choosing which part of the photo survives, not stretching it.
- Leave headroom for the marketplace main. Amazon rejects text, logos, and props on the main image, and the product must not touch the frame edge. Crop tight enough to fill 85% but loose enough to leave a clean white margin.
- Match the crop to the placement, not the capture. A 3:2 landscape capture can be cropped to a 1:1 square, a 4:5 portrait, or a 16:9 banner — the same master photo feeds every frame because you crop per placement, not per shoot.
The test is whether the product looks the same shape after the crop as it did before. A round plate stays round; a tall bottle stays tall. If it looks stretched or squashed, you resized before cropping — undo and crop first.
Step 4 — Resize the cropped canvas to the exact pixel dimensions
With the crop framed, scale the canvas to the platform's required pixel count. The tool interpolates the cropped pixels up or down to land on the exact width and height.
- Upscale to clear the 1000px minimum. Amazon rejects mains below 1000px and disables zoom below 1600px. If your capture is smaller, the tool scales it up to the target — for a sharp capture at 1000px this is invisible; for a soft phone shot blown to 1600px the interpolation can read soft, which is a capture problem (reshoot sharper) not a resize problem.
- Downscale to fit size limits. Shopify, email, and some ad placements cap file size rather than dimensions. After resizing to the right pixel count, run the result through the image compressor to hit a target KB without re-cropping — resize sets the dimensions, compression sets the bytes, and they are independent passes.
- Export as JPG for the marketplace main. Marketplaces want a flattened JPG on the primary image, not a PNG with transparency. If your cutout still has transparency, flatten it onto pure white with the white background tool before this resize step, so the resize operates on the final composited frame.
The output is a single file at the exact dimensions the marketplace's upload field expects — no rejection for "image too small," no auto-crop into an unintended composition.
Step 5 — Batch the per-platform exports from one master
The leverage of getting one crop right is that the same master photo feeds every platform. Run the resize once per target frame — square for Amazon, 4:5 for Instagram, 4:3 for the Shopify card — and you have a folder of pixel-exact exports ready for every placement.
- Name by platform, not by capture.

- Keep the uncropped master. The full-resolution capture stays as the source of truth; the per-platform crops are disposable derivatives. Re-edit the master, re-export the set, and every placement updates from one change.
When the free method is not enough
